Setup OctaneVPN Using Ubuntu/Mint Network Manager

Setup OpenVPN on Ubuntu/Mint Network Manager

  1. Open the terminal
  2. Install the network manager openvpn by typing the following command in the terminal:
    sudo apt-get install network-manager-openvpn
    Or, if you have Ubuntu v16+, use this command:
    sudo apt-get install network-manager-openvpn-gnome
  3. Download the OctaneVPN CA Certificate: OctaneVPN.crt and save it in a suitable place to keep.
  4. Restart the Network Manager by disabling and enabling the network
  5. Click on the Network Manager Icon (top right menu bar)
    Click Edit connections
    Click the 'Add' button in the Network Settings Window that opens
  6. Click Create to setup a new VPN interface
    Choose OpenVPN for Connections type
  7. In the Editing VPN connection window, Enter the following details
    • Connection name: OctaneVPN
    • Gateway: gw1.mia4.octanevpn.com or choose the URL of any of our Gateway Locations
    • Type: Select Password
    • User name: Enter your OctaneVPN user name
    • Password: Enter your OctaneVPN password (not the plaintext OctaneVPN password)
    • CA Certificate: Select the location of the octanevpn.crt cert you downloaded earlier
  8. Click Advanced near the bottom of the window. In the General tab:
    • Custom Gateway Port: 443 or 8888
    • Custom MTU: 1557

    On the same dialog box, select the Security tab:
    • Cipher: Select AES-256-CBC
    • Click OK, then Save
  9. Click the Network icon in the menu bar and activate the VPN from the VPN Conections submenu. You may be prompted for the system password
